Calcium sulphate Grease

Calcium Sulfonate Greases (CaS Greases) emerged in the lubrication industry as high-performance greases known for their exceptional mechanical stability, corrosion protection, high load-carrying capacity, and water resistance.

Brief History:
1960s Origin: Calcium sulfonate greases were developed in the 1960s, stemming from the technology of overbased calcium sulfonate detergents in motor oils. These greases were developed to overcome the limitations of traditional soap-based greases, offering superior performance under extreme conditions.
Technological Advancements: Over time, continuous research and developments have led to improved formulations, allowing calcium sulfonate greases to meet a variety of industrial requirements, especially in marine, mining, and steel production, where extreme pressures, high temperatures, and corrosive conditions are prevalent.

Performance Chemistry:

  • Corrosion Protection: The excess base (from overbasing) in the calcium sulfonate complex can neutralize acids formed during operation, providing excellent corrosion protection to metal surfaces.
  • High-Temperature Stability: The calcium sulfonate complex has a high dropping point, enabling the grease to maintain its structure and provide effective lubrication at elevated temperatures.
  • Water Resistance: The chemical structure of calcium sulfonate complex imparts excellent water resistance, preventing washout and maintaining effective lubrication in wet conditions.

Molecular Interaction:

  • The interaction between the calcium sulfonate molecules and the base oil creates a stable matrix that holds the oil in place.
  • The colloidal calcium carbonate particles within the overbased calcium sulfonate complex create a barrier, providing excellent anti-wear properties and protecting surfaces from corrosion and extreme pressures.

Today with rising costs of lithium, calcium sulfonate grease technology has once again come to the fore, with lubricant manufacturers optimising the technology to develop a multipurpose grease that can be used across a wide spectrum of heavy manufacturing industries.

Automotive Industry:

  • Calcium sulfonate greases are extensively used for lubricating various automotive components such as wheel bearings, chassis parts, universal joints, and other moving parts.
  • They are especially suitable for heavy-duty vehicles that operate under high pressure and severe conditions, like trucks and buses.

Marine Industry:

  • Their excellent water resistance and corrosion protection make them ideal for marine applications.
  • They are used to lubricate components exposed to saltwater, such as ship propeller shafts, rudder posts, and winches.

Steel and Metal Industry:

  • In steel mills and metalworking industries, calcium sulfonate greases are used for lubricating rollers, bearings, conveyors, and other machinery operating under high temperatures and loads.
  • They are also used to protect equipment from corrosion and to extend equipment lifespan.

Mining Industry:

  • They are utilized in various mining equipment like excavators, loaders, and drills due to their high load-carrying ability and resistance to water washout.
  • They help in reducing wear and tear and in extending the life of the machinery in harsh mining conditions.

Construction Industry:

  • Construction equipment like bulldozers, cranes, and excavators benefit from the use of calcium sulfonate greases due to their extreme pressure properties and mechanical stability.
  • They help protect equipment that is exposed to dust, dirt, and adverse weather conditions.

Agricultural Industry:

  • Agricultural machinery such as tractors, harvesters, and plows use calcium sulfonate greases for lubrication and protection against corrosion.
  • They are chosen for their ability to perform well in outdoor conditions and resist water washout.

Food and Beverage Industry:

  • Certain food-grade calcium sulfonate greases are used in food processing equipment to reduce wear and corrosion while being safe for incidental food contact.
  • They help in maintaining hygiene and ensuring smooth operation of the machinery.

Power Generation Industry:

  • Calcium sulfonate greases are used in power plants for lubricating bearings in motors, turbines, and generators.
  • They are preferred for their ability to withstand high temperatures and resist oxidation.

Paper Industry:

  • In the paper and pulp industry, they are used to lubricate and protect machinery such as paper rollers and pulpers from corrosion and wear.
  • Their resistance to water and high-temperature stability are crucial in this industry.
